I used to read that as a reward — something you get once you've earned the rest. It isn't. The shepherd makes him lie down. The sheep didn't decide it was time. Somewhere in my twenties that stopped being a nice image and started being the only way I could explain the seasons where nothing moved and I was still being taken care of.
The scene is drawn small on purpose: a shepherd, a few sheep, open ground, room to breathe around it. It prints large across the back in soft charcoal on the light colors, and in warm bone on Pepper. The front stays clean.
